Hemicellulose-based Film Development Service

Hemicellulose-based Film Development Service

Hemicellulose-based Film Development Service at CD BioGlyco

CD BioGlyco provides high-quality Marine Carbohydrate-based Material Development Services to meet client needs for drug delivery, bone tissue engineering, and more. Hemicellulose consists of sugars such as mannan, glucomannan, xylan, and xyloglucan. Hemicellulose, with its diverse structure, relatively low molecular weight, and ease of modification, offers a number of advantages in the preparation of thin films. We offer comprehensive development services for hemicellulose-based films.

  • Hemicellulose-based Film Development Service
We prepare hemicellulose-based flats by drying the film-forming solution on a mold, casting, and co-casting. We optimize the properties of the films by modifying the preparation conditions and modifying the hemicellulose according to client requirements. We maximize the barrier properties, flexibility, mechanical properties, biocompatibility, thermal stability, etc., of the films.

  • Modification of Hemicellulose
Changes in the structure of hemicellulose affect the mechanical and thermal properties of hemicellulose-based films. We improve the properties of hemicellulose-based films by modification.
    • Chemical modification
Hemicellulose has a large number of reactive groups such as carbonyl, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups in its main and side chains. Using this as a reaction site, we modify a series of chemical reactions.
      • Esterification
We increase the flexibility and hydrophobicity of hemicellulose membranes by replacing hydroxyl groups with hydrophobic esters through esterification.
      • Etherification
Etherification is a reaction between an alkylating agent and an alcohol in the presence of a base. Our common alkylating agents include alkyl halides (iodides, bromides, and chlorides), epoxides, and alkyl sulfonates.
      • Graft modification
We introduce functional groups into hemicellulose through graft polymerization to improve the properties required for certain applications. This increases solubility in organic solvents by reducing the formation of hydrogen bonding networks.
      • Crosslinking
Modification by cross-linking provides the polymer with resistance to thermal degradation and improves resistance. Crosslinking reduces the solubility of hemicellulose in liquids and improves water resistance. Hemicellulose is crosslinked by chemical crosslinkers or radiation.
    • Physical modification
We evenly distribute small molecules and/or polymers into the hemicellulose matrix. The composition and structure of the hemicellulose-based film are altered by non-chemical bonding, thereby improving its properties.

Results: In the present study, hemicellulose-based films were prepared by solution casting method. Distilled water was mixed with hemicellulose. And 20, 40, 60, and 80 wt % content of hemicellulose was embedded in carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Finally, a H-CMC film with a thickness range of (0.076-0.12 mm) was successfully prepared. Characterization of the film showed that the best performance of the film was obtained at 60% of hemicellulose content. The films prepared in this study can be used as potential materials for green packaging applications.
