Marine-derived pectin is a unique anionic polysaccharide. It is composed of the α-1,4 linked D-galactopyranosyluronic acid units and rhamnogalacturonan units. Pectin has good biocompatibility and biodegradability. According to the molecular structure properties of pectin, we control the delivery preparations (microspheres, beads, and particles) into completely different environments, such as the nose, vagina, eye, stomach, and large intestine, especially the colon, to achieve the purpose of drug delivery. CD BioGlyco provides pectin-based drug-delivery vehicle development services to maximize the performance of pectin and improve the advantages of drug delivery. Moreover, we provide other marine carbohydrate-based drug-delivery vehicles such as Heparin, Chondroitin, Heparan, and Keratan Sulfate.
Pectin-based Drug-Delivery Vehicle Development Service at CD BioGlyco
- Preparation and Characterization of Pectin: To improve the properties of pectin such as chemical stability and drug release properties, we offer pectin-providing modification services (e.g. amide pectin, alkylated pectin, etc.). The viscosity and stability of the pectin are subsequently analyzed. Furthermore, we offer comprehensive pectin structure analysis services including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
- Construction of Pectin-based Drug-delivery Vehicle: At CD BioGlyco, we offer multiple categories of drug-delivery vehicle development services including but not limited to microspheres, beads, hydrogels, and matrix tablets. Depending on client needs such as delivery setting and release location, our researchers help the client develop project plans efficiently.
- Drug Release: We evaluate the in vitro release efficiency by shaping the drug model to provide specific analysis services for the pectin drug-delivery vehicle. We provide our clients with specific release mechanisms and drug sequences.

Results: In this study, two water-soluble anionic polysaccharides were used to prepare low methoxy amidated pectin (LMAP)/sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) microspheres by an ionic gel method. The microspheres overcome the challenge of using pectin alone which leads to the rapid release of drugs in the upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The preparation conditions were optimized by an experimental multiple regression analysis method with 24 factorial designs to ensure efficient capture of microspheres (82-99%). It was shown that the f progesterone release rate is proportional to the drug content and has a low correlation with the cross-linker concentration. This property can be used to adjust the drug release efficiency. In vitro and in vivo experiments have shown that the prepared microspheres are effectively involved in the colonic targeted drug delivery process, improving the efficacy of the drug in the treatment of localized colonic pathology.
