CD BioGlyco specializes in the custom manufacturing of highly pure, defined seaweed oligosaccharide ingredients, focusing particularly on compounds that exhibit potent hair growth-promoting activities. Our service addresses the critical need for scalable production of bioactives like oligo-fucoidan and neoagarooligosaccharides (NAOs), providing partners with research-grade and commercial-scale quantities tailored to their precise application requirements in dermatological and hair care products.
Seaweed oligosaccharides are recognized for their ability to significantly promote hair growth, primarily by stimulating the proliferation of dermal papilla cells (DPCs) and regulating the hair growth cycle. Specific types, such as NAOs derived from red algae agar and oligo-fucoidans from brown algae, have demonstrated these beneficial activities. NAOs, for instance, are known to stimulate the expression of growth factors critical for the anagen phase of the hair cycle.
CD BioGlyco excels at tailoring the production process to deliver seaweed oligosaccharides that meet rigorous application standards:
1. Raw Material Sourcing and Validation
We begin with the responsible sourcing of high-quality marine biomass (e.g., red and brown algae). Each batch is subjected to rigorous quality control checks, including species identification and testing for contaminants, to ensure the consistent, high-quality starting material necessary for reproducible results.
2. Polysaccharide Extraction and Pre-treatment
The raw seaweed undergoes optimized extraction protocols—such as hot water extraction or acid/alkaline extraction—to isolate the target parent polysaccharides (e.g., agar, fucoidan). Pre-treatment steps are tailored to enhance substrate accessibility for subsequent enzymatic cleavage.
3. Controlled Oligosaccharide Production
This critical step involves highly precise enzymatic or chemoenzymatic depolymerization. Reaction conditions (pH, temperature, enzyme concentration, time) are meticulously controlled and optimized to maximize the yield of the target low-molecular-weight oligosaccharides with proven hair growth activity.
4. Targeted Fractionation and Isolation
The resulting oligosaccharide mixture is then processed using advanced purification techniques like preparative chromatography. This separates the desired oligosaccharide fraction, such as NAOs of a specific size, from residual polymers, monosaccharides, and reaction byproducts.
5. Structural Characterization and Quality Control
The isolated fraction undergoes comprehensive structural analysis using advanced analytical tools (e.g., NMR, MS, GPC). We confirm the molecular weight, linkage, and degree of sulfation or other substitutions, ensuring the ingredient meets the customer's exact structural specifications and purity requirements.
6. Final Formulation and Custom Delivery
The final, high-purity seaweed oligosaccharide ingredient is prepared for shipping according to client specifications, which may include custom formulation into a powder or solution. Comprehensive documentation, including the certificate of analysis (CoA), is provided.

Results: This study explores the potential of algal oligosaccharides (AOS) in ameliorating androgenetic alopecia (AGA). AOS with different degrees of polymerization (DP2, DP4-6, DP8-12) were prepared via agar biodegradation using the deep-sea bacterium Flammeovirga pacifica WPAGA1. In vitro experiments showed that AOS dose-dependently and DP-dependently normalized DHT-induced alterations of hair-growth-related factors in human hair follicle dermal papilla cells. In vivo, AOS (DP2) extended the anagen phase, delayed catagen progression, and enhanced hair length, density, and thickness in mice, with better efficacy when combined with penetration enhancers. The findings indicate that AOS antagonize key AGA pathogenic factors, suggesting their potential as a safer alternative for AGA prevention and treatment, possibly via antioxidant activities.

How do your seaweed oligosaccharides compare to standard seaweed extracts for hair growth?
Our precise oligosaccharides are significantly superior. Standard extracts contain a heterogeneous mixture of molecules; ours are carefully depolymerized and purified to focus on the small, defined, and highly bioactive molecules with proven mechanisms, leading to predictable and enhanced performance.
Is the custom manufacturing process scalable for commercial production?
Absolutely. Our proprietary workflow is optimized for seamless scale-up. We use large-scale technologies like preparative chromatography to efficiently transition from gram-scale R&D samples to multi-kilogram commercial batches.
