Results: The authors provide an overview of 39 lectins from the phylum Porifera, which includes Pellina semitubulosa lectin. Their purification from crude extracts was primarily carried out through affinity chromatography and gel filtration techniques. Additional methods were developed to study sponge lectins, such as screening sponge genomes and expressing them in heterologous bacterial systems. The characterization of the lectins was achieved through Edman degradation or mass spectrometry.
